Before I started Zepbound, I jokingly called myself a “carbo-tarian.” I didn’t love meat. I didn’t love vegetables. But I sure loved a bagel.
I expected Zepbound to quiet my appetite. What I didn’t expect was for it to completely rewire what sounds good to me. And here’s what I’ve learned along the way: these taste changes aren’t just quirky side effects. If you pay attention to them, they can actually make your weight loss easier.
Here are the changes that surprised me most — and how I’ve learned to work with each one.
Bread just… stopped calling my name
This is the big one. The woman who built her entire diet around carbs rarely craves bread anymore. I don’t avoid it out of willpower — the craving simply isn’t there. If you’d told me that two years ago, I would have laughed.
My advice: Don’t restock your pantry assuming your old cravings will return. Early on, I wasted money replacing carb-heavy staples I never touched again. Let your grocery list evolve with your new appetite instead of shopping from muscle memory. Buy smaller quantities of your old favorites until you know what your new normal looks like.
Alcohol lost its appeal
I went from drinking two or three times a month to fewer than five times a year. It’s not a rule I set for myself — I just don’t think about it. Honestly, it’s one of the strangest changes. I almost wish I wanted it more, but I don’t.
My advice: Those are significant empty calories that quietly left my week without any effort on my part. If you notice the same shift, don’t fight to keep alcohol in your routine out of habit or social pressure. Order the sparkling water and let this one work for you — it may be one of the easiest calorie cuts you’ll ever make.
Sweets got quieter (with one weekly exception)
Most of the time, I don’t crave sweets at all. The exception: days six and seven before my next shot, when chocolate cravings show up like clockwork. But here’s the wild part — about ten Lily’s no-sugar-added chocolate chips completely satisfies me. Ten chips. That’s it – 10 little chocolate chips and I’m happy!
Even stranger: cottage cheese with a spoonful of low-sugar jam now genuinely tastes like dessert. And a Fairlife chocolate protein shake feels like a treat. Past me would never have believed that sentence.
Lesson learned: Actually, two of them…
- First, track your cravings against your shot cycle. Once I realized my chocolate cravings were predictable, they stopped feeling like failures and started feeling like a calendar event I could plan for.
- Second, portion your treat before you start eating. The medication shrinks the “satisfaction dose” — a small pre-portioned amount will likely be enough, and pre-portioning means you never have to make that decision mid-craving.
Coffee needed a workaround
Regular coffee suddenly wasn’t appealing at all. My fix: I fill half my cup with a Premier Protein café latte. Is it really hot coffee anymore? Debatable. But it works — and as a bonus, I’ve gotten 15 grams of protein in before breakfast even starts.
My advice: If a daily staple stops tasting right, don’t just abandon it — experiment with a swap that pulls double duty. Turning my coffee into a protein delivery system was an accident that became one of my best habits.
Fast food doesn’t even taste like food
A few weeks ago, I was in a hurry and grabbed a cheeseburger and fries from a drive-through. It honestly didn’t taste real. Not “I felt guilty eating it” — it literally didn’t register as food. That was a wild moment.
Restaurant food in general now feels heavy and greasy to me. Sometimes it’s good — but after a few bites, I’m fully satisfied and done.
The takeaway: Notice these moments instead of pushing through them. Your changed palate is doing the willpower work for you — but only if you stop eating when the appeal stops. At restaurants, I now assume I’m taking half home before I even order, which takes the pressure off finishing anything.
I crave protein now. Actual protein.
Hard-boiled eggs. Scrambled eggs. Cottage cheese. And every two or three weeks, a genuine craving for red meat — something I never once craved in my “carbotarian” days.
My advice: Lean into this one hard. Protein helps preserve muscle while you’re losing weight, and most people on GLP-1 medications struggle to eat enough of it. If your body is actually asking for protein, hitting your daily target becomes almost effortless. Keep it convenient: I always have things like string cheese, high protein/high fiber overnight oats and hard-boiled eggs prepped in the fridge, because a craving you can satisfy in ten seconds is a craving that keeps you on track.
My new obsessions: spicy brown mustard and one magic seasoning
Spicy brown mustard has become my go-to condiment for almost everything. And Trader Joe’s 21 Seasoning Salute? I want to put it on everything. My preferences have shifted toward sharp, savory flavors in a way I never saw coming.
My advice: Find your version of these. When rich and sweet flavors fade, bold condiments and seasonings are what keep simple, high-protein food from getting boring. Mustard, hot sauce, vinegar-based sauces, and big seasoning blends add almost no calories — stock a few and let them carry your meals.
Side note: If you don’t have a Trader Joes near you, you can now find this seasoning on Amazon. It’s a little bit more that the in-store price, but it’s so worth it (IMHO!).
If you’re just starting Zepbound, plan for this…
A few things I wish someone had told me:
- Don’t meal-prep two weeks of food before your first shot. Your tastes may change faster than you expect, and you don’t want a freezer full of meals that no longer appeal to you.
- Expect your coffee order (or another daily ritual) to change. Have a backup plan so you’re not caught off guard.
- Budget a little for grocery experimentation. Your first several shopping trips are research. Some old favorites will flop and some unexpected foods will become staples. If you need some tips on what to buy, check out our GLP-1 shopping list.
- Track your cravings against your shot cycle. If cravings show up on a schedule like mine do, you can plan for them instead of being surprised by them.
The bottom line
Zepbound didn’t just change how much I eat — it changed what I want to eat.
The “carbotarian” is gone, and someone who craves eggs and red meat moved in. These changes felt strange at first, but they’ve become some of my biggest advantages. Pay attention to yours, work with them instead of around them, and they’ll do a surprising amount of the heavy lifting for you.
What’s changed for you? I’d love to hear the strangest one.
